Wild Boar: Soil Turners of the Forest Floor
Wild boar root through forest and woodland soil in search of food, physically turning over topsoil and leaf litter in a way that can help incorporate organic matter into the soil and create the disturbed patches some native seeds need to germinate.
Boar rooting behaviour physically disturbs the top layers of forest soil, mixing leaf litter and organic matter downward and creating small patches of bare, disturbed ground. In their native ranges and at natural population densities, this disturbance has been shown in some European forest studies to aid the germination of certain native seed species that require exposed soil, and to accelerate the incorporation of surface litter into the soil carbon pool. The role is genuinely double-edged, however: at high densities or outside their native range, boar rooting can also increase erosion, disturb sensitive understory vegetation, and spread invasive plant seeds, so their net ecological effect depends heavily on population density and local context rather than being uniformly positive.
