Notably, researcher Jim Estes and colleagues documented that after industrial whaling collapsed great whale populations in the North Pacific, some orca pods shifted a larger share of their diet toward sea otters, and the resulting drop in otter numbers contributed to urchin barrens and kelp forest loss in parts of the Aleutian Islands — a striking illustration of how removing one link in a food web (great whales) can cascade through predation shifts to damage a carbon-storing habitat (kelp) several steps removed.
