| Great Whales | The Carbon Pump | Whales store carbon in their massive bodies for decades and, when they die, sink to the seafloor carrying that carbon with them ('whale fall'). Their nutrient-rich feces also fertilize phytoplankton blooms near the surface, boosting ocean carbon capture. | Great whales function as mobile carbon reservoirs and ecosystem engineers across their multi-decade lifespans. A single large whale can sequester tens of tonnes of carbon in its body over its lifetime; when it dies naturally and sinks (a 'whale fall'), that carbon is removed from the surface carbon cycle for centuries as it feeds deep-sea food webs. Equally important is the 'whale pump': whales feed at depth and defecate iron- and nitrogen-rich plumes near the surface, fertilizing phytoplankton blooms that are themselves responsible for a substantial share of oceanic primary production and CO2 drawdown.
