Copepods: The Ocean's Carbon Commuters

Copepods are tiny crustacean zooplankton, among the most numerous animals on Earth, that graze phytoplankton and migrate vertically each day, physically transporting carbon from the surface to deeper water through respiration and sinking waste.

Copepods perform a daily vertical migration — rising to feed on phytoplankton near the surface at night and descending hundreds of metres during the day to avoid predators — and this movement actively pumps carbon downward through respired CO₂ and dense faecal pellets released at depth. Because copepods are thought to be the most abundant multicellular animal group on the planet by numbers, their cumulative contribution to the biological carbon pump is significant even though each individual is only a few millimetres long. Their populations are highly sensitive to ocean warming and shifting plankton bloom timing, making copepod abundance a closely watched indicator of ocean carbon pump strength.
